I lived in the city next to Harbin to the east (Acheng) and would occasionally go to Harbin by bus or train. The city is big enough so that there are a diverse assortment of restaurants, bars, karaoke bars; so yes there is a nightlife. There's going to be bar fights no matter where you go. Harbin is peaceful for the most part. Centre Street at night is beautiful, especially in winter and the ice sculptures. The Russian influence adds to its appeal. I can recommend Harbin as a place to live and work.
