Resume and Interview Tips

How to Make a Resume Computer Friendly
By:Sharon Mcelwee

Create a resume as you normally would in your favorite program and save it as a Microsoft Word file. Most employers ask for resume to be in Word format, even though Word files tend to be virus-laden and don't hold formatting well. This resume will be the one you send to employers who request files in word format or websites that allow you to upload your resume.

Save your resume as a text-only file with a .txt extension. This will be the resume you send to employers who request them via email but not as attachments. Strip all fancy formatting out of the resume, including bold type and bullets. Close the file.

Open the text-only file you just saved. What does it look like? How is the formatting? Can you read the resume quickly and easily? If not, try using a hard return after every line. Close the file.

Open your Word file. Do a spellcheck to make sure there are no mistakes. Look over everything and make sure its correct, because once you create a PDF you can't edit it. Now you are going to "print" a PDF file.

Go to the "File" menu, and select "Print." In your printer list, select "Adobe PDF." Select "Print" under "Job Options" if you want. If not, hit print and save the file. You're done! Wasn't that easy? Email this resume to employers, post it on your website, print it out, whatever. PDF stands for Portable Document Format, which means it will look the same everywhere you post it.

TIPS:

When selecting fonts for your resume, use common ones like Times New Roman, which is easy to read. If you use a special font, others might not be able to read your resume because they don't have a copy of the typeface on their computer.

Use the "Enter" key every time you want to start a new line. Also incorporate manual page breaks when you want to start a new page.
