Motivation Keys - The 3 Dangers of Depending on Someone Else to Motivate You
By:Anthony D Carter

"The best motivation is self-motivation. The guy says, 'I wish someone would come by and turn me on.' What if they don't show up? You've got to have a better plan for your life." ~Jim Rohn

Undependable. When you depend on others for your motivation to do something you can end up waiting for a very long time. And as the quote states that person may never show up. You will end up waiting your life away. If you depend on others for motivation then you will face constant disappointment. A person may fire you up on one occasion and leave you wanting at another time. If you are depending on that type of motivation then you'll have to wait until you get the chance to be around that type of person again. You never know what you are going to get. You end up wasting a large portion of your life waiting instead of doing.

Solution: Depend on yourself for motivation. As the saying goes motivation is an inside job. Let your own aspirations motivate you to do what needs to be done.

Direction. When you are motivated by others you are also being led by their desires for your life. You are not controlling the direction in which your life is going. When you hand that control over to others it is hard to tell where you will end up.

Solution: Be sure to determine the direction for your life by setting goals and formulating sound plans. Get motivated by the pursuit and accomplishment of those goals. When you do that you never have to worry about depending on anyone else for your motivation.

Temporary. When you are motivated by others it is almost always temporary. The common example occurs with motivational speakers. You can go to hear a motivational speaker on a Sunday. You leave there fired up and ready to set the world on fire with your new found excitement. Yet by Wednesday you can't even get out of bed because you are feeling so low. This roller coaster ride results from being motivated emotionally from someone else. It does not last. Once the emotional high wears off you end up crashing. You end up starting and stopping but never accomplishing anything of significance.

Solution: Use the constant drive provided by your dream. Focus on what you want as you go about doing what it takes to get it. Your dream provides inspiration. When you maintain that inspiration you give yourself consistent motivation for taking action.
