Learn Essential Spanish Phrases For Latin America
By:Noah M. Benjamin

Did you know you could get by in Latin America if you just learn Spanish phrases that are common?

On top of that, did you know that you could learn enough Spanish to get by very comfortably in under a month without investing any of your free time into it?

No?

Well, let me explain both.

Common Phrases

I am not joking when I say that you can get by in Latin America by using the bulk of these phrases. Of course, it can be confusing at times, but as long as you can indicate what you want, then you're in good shape!

To tell someone where you want to go (taxi, for example): a (location)
(For example, enter into a taxi and simply say, "A la hotel Miramont")
When ordering food: Me gustaría (food)
(For example, if you want the chicken say, "Me gustaría el pollo")
What time is it?: Que hora es?
No: No
Yes: Sí
(You will be surprised how far you can get just by saying "yes" or "no"!)
I understand: Entiendo
I don't understand: No entiendo
Can I ...?: Puedo ...?
Hello: Hola
(In Latin America, they often say "buen" or "buena" instead of "hola")
I like: Me Gusta
I want: Quiero

Learn Spanish In A Month Without Using Any Of Your Free Time

This is not meant to be a definitive list of words, but it is to give you an idea that you don't need to know a lot of Spanish to get by in Latin America.

If you were to study the language for about two weeks, you'd be able to get by with a little bit of confusion.

Study the language for a month, and you could get around in Latin America like a pro.

If you're interested in spending just a month learning basic Spanish, consider using something like an audio learning course in your car.

If you're like me, you probably spend 10 to 12 hours a week in your car, going to and from work and running miscellaneous errands.

Take advantage of all that down time you spend in your car and listen to Spanish language learning CDs. You could fit 50 hours of lessons in in a month using this method!

The Bottom Line

It's useful to learn Spanish phrases that are common, but consider using other means of language learning, like audio CDs in your car, to pick up a bit more of the language. You can learn a whole lot dedicating your down time in your car to language learning!
