How do I teacher ESL to adults who are not literate in their first language?

Hello from Portland, Oregon!
Just curious about the best method to go about teaching adults to read & write in English when they are not literate in their native language. I'm starting a community ESL class and most of my students have little literacy skills. Although the focus of the class will be on speaking and listening, most of my curriculum has reading&writing activities.
