English schools in China

Zhejiang - Hangzhou
School:Hangzhou International School

Hangzhou International School offers local expatriate students in the Hangzhou area a world-class education delivered in a unique setting. The school campus, located on the grounds of the highly respected Hangzhou Number Two Middle School, is fully equipped and staffed to offer a comprehensive international program. The curriculum, taught in English and structured on the American format (and offering Advanced Placement courses), benefits from the cooperation of its sister schools of the InternationalSchool Development Foundation (ISDF) who work together to standardize resources and programming.

HIS features western-style fully equipped classrooms, multiple state-of-the-art computer labs, science labs, playfields, a new gymnasium, and a library all of which compare very favorably to other similar sized international schools around the world. There are currently 40 expatriate teachers on staff from 8 different countries with the majority from North America. All teachers speak English with native level fluency. The small classes and school size ensure that students receive the attention they need in order to achieve maximum success.

HIS opened in August 2002 with 15 students in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 4, and currently serves over 300 students PS-12th grade. The school is proud to have its first graduating class this school year (2007).

HIS accepts pre-school through 5th grade students on a space-available basis for an English as a Second or Other Language (ESOL) program designed for beginning English speakers. These students will participate in most mainstream classes and will receive ESOL support during English and Foreign Language classes. A limited number of beginning English speakers in grades 6-8 will be enrolled into the Transitional English Program (TEP.) Students who apply for grade 8 must have English proficiency and have a school record that indicates that they can succeed in an English-speaking environment. All high school applicants (grades 9-12) must have a strong command of the English language. Families are strongly advised to contact the school to determine if space is available before making applications or plans to relocate.

We are very proud that HIS has been fully accredited by the Western Association of School and Colleges (WASC) in the United States. Please feel welcome to visit HIS. We would be pleased to show you our beautiful campus and answer all of your questions.
