Longji Terraces, Another Amazing Place in Guilin
By:BoBo Wang

Taking an area of 66 square meters, Longji Terraces locate 80 km to Guilin, China. Terrace groups spread on the hills between 300 and 1100 m with the gradients of 26% to 35%, and some reach to 50%. Terraces coil from the hills’ foot to the top, making the small hills like screws and the larger ones like pagodas. In the sea of terraces, many pieces of fields are so small that are only capable of growing one or two rows of crops, and even the largest one is within 6 acre. The terraces appear different sceneries year round.

Two minorities are living In Longji Terraces scenic spot, the Zhuang Minority and Yao Minority. Pingan Zhuang Terraces and Jinkeng Yao Terraces separately represent the Zhuang and Yao cultures. Zhuang people in Longji are representatives of North Zhuang with unique clothing and special customs. Tourists can appreciate quaint folk dancing performance and well-preserved clothing. Beautiful featured Zhuang folk songs will also leave a deep impression to every visitor. Many conventional Zhuang residences are reformed to home inns where tourists could spend their nights.

Longji Terraces were constructed during Yuan dynasty and has a history of 650 years. Ancestors who opened up the terraces with blood and sweat had not thought that this place could be turned into such a grand view with charming and dashing curves attracting numerous people. Their wisdom and power are fully embodied on the splendid terraces.

Once there is a joke to illustrate how small the terraces are. A farmer was ordered to farm 206 fields. After he farmed all fields, he found there were altogether only 205 fields and the last one disappeared. He counted again, and there were still 205. Finally, he picked up his grass raincoat, the disappearing field appeared. So there is a saying that one grass raincoat could cover one field.

One half month after lunar April 15th and one half month after the Mid-Autumn Day are the best time to visit these terraces. The snowy landscape of Longji is also fantastic, but the time is unpredictable, so it all depends. The hottest month is July with an average temperature of 28.3 Celsius and the lowest January is around 7.9 Celsius.

To better enjoy the beautiful view, tourists are much fond of hiking around. When you are finding attractions among villages, remember to walk along the stone roads if coming across the forks. Asking the working farmers is also an efficient way to find your destinations as they would guide you kind-heart.

Maybe Longji Terraces are not that famous as other Guilin attractions like cruising on Li River. However, once you visit this amazing place, your Guilin China vacation would be more memorable.
