Unless you are up for risks and adventures, always check the specific luggage guidelines of your airline. You do not have to call them or go to their office; you only have to search their website and voila, their luggage rules and regulations are posted there. You better follow these rules to avoid ruining your vacation or business trip.

Aside from the rules regarding the weight restrictions of your suitcase and carry on, you also have to follow the general 3-1-1 rule for your toiletries. This means that you are only allowed to bring 3 ounces of any liquid or gel product (except for milk formula and medications). Plan ahead

After checking the airline rules and regulations for luggage, the next thing you need to do is plan. Many people dismiss this planning part because they think it's just a waste of time. What happens is that these people begin packing haphazardly, placing everything in reach into their suitcase and they end up either over packing or under packing.

Now the planning entails knowing how long you are going to stay in your destination. You cannot just stay you are going to stay as long as you like; you might as well migrate then. If you are going on a three day business trip, then better pack different business suits that you can wear for those three days, and casual clothes as well.

But if you are going on, say, a two week vacation, you cannot expect to be able to bring 2 weeks' worth of clothes over the airplane. Since you're staying long, one can assume that you are going to do your laundry there so just bring important clothes. Pack clothes that can be easily matched with your other garments and accessories if you must. Two or three pairs of shoes should be enough.

Bring versatile clothes

As said in the previous tip, you do not have to bring your entire wardrobe to the trip but what you need to bring are durable clothes that you can wear on almost any occasion. If you are going to attend a formal event, of course you should bring formal clothes but if not, you can stock on casual and semi-formal outfits that you can match with your other clothes.

Also, if you are going to visit an unfamiliar place, especially if you are alone, do not pack extravagant clothes (unless an event calls for it) and very expensive jewelry. This will be like placing a sign on your back that says, rob me quick! Just bring some jeans, comfortable blouses and shirts, a couple of shirts or whatever it is you think can be worn anywhere.

Bring a jacket unless you are going to a tropical place. When you do bring a jacket though, wear it during the flight to save space and weight on your luggage. Also avoid bringing clothes that need ironing or other garments that need maintenance. And go easy on the shoes. Two pairs of shoes and a pair of slippers or sandals should be enough.
