Our world has become a global village. We can communicate with people all over the place, read news from other countries and even visit cities thousands of miles away without ever leaving the house. For some people being online has become a lifestyle, they can’t imagine a day without checking their e-mail, social site profile or browsing the web. Others discovered the beauty of the outside world and decided to check it out in person. Traveling to different countries is great for vacation, but to truly immerse oneself in the culture, one has to understand the way of thinking and living in a foreign country, and that is only possible for people who decide to lose their tourist status and move somewhere for at least a few months.

As a tourist you’re in a cocoon, there are other tourists around you, most likely speaking your language and sharing a background; the guide takes you to places that are not too exotic but still give you the feel you’ve seen things; the hotel provides you with local flavors that are prepared to satisfy foreigners. It’s only when you’re away from your countrymen, forced to speak the language, eating what the locals eat and staying off the beaten tourist path that you get to know the real place you’re at. But is it something for you?

In most parts of the world people learn English as their second or foreign language, so even if you don’t speak any other languages, you will most likely be able to communicate. You can move to France, Italy or Japan and actually use the language to your benefit finding a job as an English teacher. When you decide to move to a different country, remember that language is not the only thing tat is different there. Westerners don’t seem to have much difficulty understanding how different western countries operate, but moving east or south can be quite a shock. Also when leaving, don’t feel like you have to take your whole world with you. Opt for a downsized wardrobe, just a couple of books, a laptop with a mini mouse, and most definitely a camera. Everything else you can either buy or just live without for a couple of months.

If your purpose is to get to know a foreign country, one thing is imperative. Stay clear of your countrymen. If you hang out with them instead of the locals, you’ll never find out what the real life is like where you are you will just be another tourist living an Americanized version of the life you wanted to try.
