Resume and Interview Tips

Job Interview Tips for Weaknesses
By:Raene Kaleinani

One of the most challenging questions in a job interview is "What are your weaknesses?" Planning your responses ahead of time will help you get over the hurdle of this interview question. Everyone has weaknesses, yet not everyone is willing to admit it. Interviewers ask this question in search of an honest response and want to learn about the steps you took to overcome your weakness in a real work situation. Planning your response ahead of time calms the edge on answering this nerve-racking question.

Tip 1: Self-Awareness
Being aware of your worker weaknesses is the first step in planning an appropriate response. Think about challenging times at work that made you feel less than confident. Write out your worker weaknesses in complete sentences stating your weakness and how it made you feel. For example, "I tend to offer my time to assist my co-workers, often times without checking my own deadline schedule and I find myself feeling overwhelmed."

Tip 2 : Plan Your Response
Review your sentences and select a weakness that you can explain the steps you took to perform a successful outcome. Write out your response in a complete sentence. For example, "When someone asks me for help, I tell them that I need to check my deadline schedule before I can give an answer. I checked my schedule and I was able to help out on select time blocks that didn't interfere with my responsibilities." The successful outcome in this situation is a unified team effort to successfully accomplish a task.

Tip 3: Rehearse Your Response
Repetition helps you feel more confident about your response. Rehearse your response in front of the mirror, family members and friends. Ask for their feedback on how you can improve your response and body language to show confidence.
