Resume and Interview Tips

Job Interview Tips for Success
By:Curt Fletcher

A job interview can be a nerve-racking experience. However, since you were selected to have the interview, you should feel confident that you have what it takes to be selected. To improve your chances of landing the job, you should be prepared to handle any questions that are thrown your way. Understand how your body language and voice inflection affect your chances of getting the job.

Be Prepared
Many interviewers ask about strengths, weaknesses, five-year plan, reason you should be given the job and scenarios that demonstrate your experience. Be over-prepared for these. Find another person to role play with so you can get feedback. Practice until you have mastered the delivery you feel sounds the best.

Once you have practiced enough, your answers will become second nature. This allows your responses in a live interview to feel authentic and spontaneous. You want to avoid being stumped. Not being able to answer questions about yourself shows a lack of foresight and personal awareness.

Understand Your Mission
Be clear about the prospective job's responsibilities. Understand the company's terminology so that you can relate your previous experience using their words. This means scanning the job description, learning key words and phrases, and reusing those words and phrases to describe your previous experience. Your mission is to make the interviewer comfortable with your knowledge and skill base.

Body and Voice
Be aware what story your body language is telling the interviewer. Sit up straight so that you can display confidence. Make eye contact so that you can show understanding and trust. When doing this, hold eye contact for two to three seconds, look away, and then re-establish it. This avoids too much eye contact, which can feel awkward.

When speaking, make certain that you sound sure of yourself. Don't be bashful or shy, as this shows weakness. Talk with confidence and a healthy volume control. This means speaking loudly enough to be heard and understood, but not too loudly or softly. Speaking too softly can indicate that you are unsure of yourself. Don't be afraid to smile or laugh. Smiling show a positive attitude and a firm self assurance.
