Resume and Interview Tips

How to Write a Resume When Self- Employed
By:Tielle Webb

If you are seeking new employment, a résumé is imperative. Everyone should have one, especially now when most jobs can only be applied for online. Your résumé is your first impression, and might be the only foot in the door you will have. If you are self-employed, creating your résumé is a bit different than it is for a job seeker employed by someone else. However, it does not need to be more difficult.

List any licenses you have earned and education you have pursued. If you have received special accolades, such as a high GPA or valedictorian status, include these details as well.

List jobs individually. Think of different aspects of your job and break them down. The main category "handyman" might be broken down to "plumber," "electrician" and "home maintenance."

Include a section to show your skills and talents. Use action words, such as "provide excellent customer service" or "responsible for maintaining accounts payable."

Incorporate clubs or activities in which you actively participate. This shows a potential employer that you are engaged, interested and involved.

Maintain your résumé, updating it frequently. Ask happy customers and clients for permission to list them as references.
