Resume and Interview Tips

Resume Tips for Education Jobs
By:Jennifer Uhl

Resumes for education jobs are just as diverse as the jobs themselves. The type of resume you write should be unique to the position you are trying to fill. Whether you are applying for a music education job or a university teaching job, a position as an athletics director or as a substitute teacher, the quality of your resume and its ability to stand out from other applications is of vital importance in landing the job.

Objective Statement
Some industries do not lend themselves well to having an objective statement, but teaching and education job searches can benefit from this type of information. When you are applying for an education role, especially a job working with children, use the objective statement to talk about your passion and skill in the field. Use keywords and related jargon to show prospective employers you know what you are talking about. Examples include: "Passionate commitment to student development," "Promoting productive learning environment," "Enriching and fun activities and lessons" and "Looking to inspire and motivate my students."

Experience and Education
The most prominent section of your education job resume should be whichever is the most recent---your experience or your education. If you are just out of school with a teaching degree and do not have experience yet, your education should be prominent in your resume. Include where you graduated from college and what type of degree you obtained. Include any special honors or awards that you achieved, especially in coursework specific to teaching. Also include related extracurricular activities, such as internships or volunteer work. If you have teaching experience since college, list your experience first in your resume. Include each teaching position you have held, the age or grade you taught and what made each position unique. Let this section show the diversity of your experience, enabling you to stand out to prospective employers.

Key Contributions
Take your experience section a step further by focusing on key contributions for each position you have held. For example, list that you introduced music into the learning environment to improve academics and foster participation, or that you designed and implemented a hands-on technological approach to a subject matter to engage students and improve learning. If you raised grades or improved testing scores, these measurable contributions are well worth noting.
