Resume and Interview Tips

Resume Tips for Education
By:Andrew Button

Education is a dynamic, versatile profession. Some teachers teach courses in all subjects at the elementary level, some teach a single course at the high school level and some go into administration at any level. Because of this, teachers' resumes should be customized and job-specific. Some of the best material for teacher resumes include education, work experience and volunteer involvement.

Specificity
Teacher jobs are very skill-specific. Teachers usually must have education in a specific subject in order to teach the subject on a full-time basis. Teachers of gifted education, special education and higher education usually must have specific credentials relevant to those fields. When applying for any job in education, make sure you tailor your resume to show the qualifications you have that are relevant to the job.

Structure
An education resume, like any resume, should ideally contain a cover letter, a resume and a reference list. The cover letter should explain why you are seeking the job and what credentials make you a good fit. The resume should describe your credentials in terms of education history, work experience, accomplishments, awards and volunteer experience. The references should list three credible references who know you well and have qualifications relevant to education.

Passion
Education is a profession in which passion is important. A good teacher has a strong passion for helping kids to learn and grow. A resume in education should demonstrate passion for the subject through a cover letter written in an impassioned style and a resume showing a long history of involvement in helping kids. The cover letter should convey passion through phrases like "I always dreamed of" and "I have a strong passion for." The resume should include all volunteer experience related to helping kids.

Accomplishments
A good resume in education shows all the accomplishments that make you stand out as a teacher. Accomplishments like public speaking, debating and leadership are good because they show that you have excelled in activities that involve leading groups of people. Include any accomplishments you have made and awards you have received that are unique or prestigious.

References
Include three or more references who know you well and have credentials relevant to education. These can include college professors, volunteer coordinators and teachers you've interned or worked under. Select references with whom you had a good rapport, as they will be more likely to say something meaningful about you when they are called upon to provide the reference.

Writing Style
Your writing style in a resume should be clear, concise and focused. Resume keywords are industry-specific terminology used to make your resume stand out. Use resume keywords relevant to leadership and problem solving, because these are the two most important skills a teacher must possess. Leadership keywords include "directed," "managed" and "led." Problem solving keywords include "organized," "analyzed" and "evaluated." Make sure your writing is concise and keyword rich.
