Resume and Interview Tips

How to Teach Students Elements of an Interview
By:Baptist Johnson

Interview skills are life skills. A good interview can help you secure the job you want, while a bad interview is a sure way to blow your chances. Knowing the elements of an interview offers an advantage when learning how to succeed in an interview. Construct a lesson plan that focuses on learning these elements for your students.

Create games that focus on nonverbal communication. Nonverbal communication is an essential interview skill. Potential employers look for signs of weakness or anxiety through behavior. Perform scenarios where students are forced to maintain eye contact, practice handshaking, speak confidently and avoid fidgeting.

Teach students the basic components of an interview. An interview is simply a 30 minute personal profile. It is the applicant's chance to talk about themselves. Your students should be able to comfortably discuss their work experience, education history, career objectives and job-related skills. Have them put together a resume to help familiarize themselves with these components of an interview.

Prepare your students to be able to present themselves as positive and active. An interview isn't just about personal skills--it's also an assessment of the applicant’s ability to put their skills to work. Your students should be able to discuss, using examples, how they utilize their personal skills. This may include volunteer work, accomplishments, internships and personal experiences.

Perform mock interviews to promote interview skills. Mock interviews provide the opportunity to practice for real-life interviews. Assign one student the role of the interviewer and another student the role of the applicant. Lead the students through a potential interview, then have them exchange roles and run through the mock interview again.
