How to Write an ESL Teaching Job Cover Letter
By:Collaborator

An ESL (English as a Second Language) teaching job opens the door for a different type of teaching. The job opportunities may take you around the world or to a school within your area where students need to learn how to effectively communicate in English. ESL teaching abroad will introduce you to unique cultures, food and relationships.

Investigate the ESL teaching job carefully to learn everything you can about the location, type of environment and language of the children you will be teaching to speak English. You will need this information to write an effective cover letter.

Open your cover letter expressing your interest in applying for an ESL teaching position in the country or location listed on the job posting. Include how you learned about the position, especially if identifying a specific person or agency will make a connection between you and the hiring school.

Write the body of your cover letter to highlight your skills and training that meet the criteria in the job posted. This is the place to address your experience working with children. Include the ages or grade levels where you have teaching experience. Also include any specific certifications that add to your qualifications to become an ESL teacher.

Focus on the location or country where the ESL teaching job is available. For jobs in another country, express your interest and willingness to travel. Show that you have the ability to manage yourself in a different culture and work environment.

Emphasize that you understand what it takes to teach others to speak English. There are many certifications available that provide teachers with the additional training to teach English as a foreign language. Include your certification (in addition to your teaching degree) as you write the body of your cover letter.

Express any additional interests that might set you apart from other applicants. For instance, if you have an interest in developing teaching materials, mention your desire as you write your cover letter.

Include in the body of your cover letter an affirmative statement that you meet or exceed the qualifications listed on the ESL teaching job description. Follow up your statement with your specific accomplishments to confirm your qualifications.

Make your conclusion a brief statement of how you are ready to put your abilities to work for the hiring school, and express your availability for an interview with the principal or superintendent.
