Resume and Interview Tips

Essential Job Search Networking Skills
By:Tom Ryan

Looking for a job requires more than simply sending out resumes and crafting cover letters---networking is a vital aspect to both job hunting and working on your already established career. The concept of networking sounds simple enough: meet new people in your career field and forge relationships that may benefit you in the future. It may not be quite that easy, but with the right skills and strategies, you'll be making all the right connections.

Finding People
Although networking entails meeting new people, you need to find them first. Start with people you already know---asking for help and introductions is a necessary step, and nothing to be ashamed of. Think of teachers, bosses, internship advisers and other people who are familiar with you and your work. Inform them of your goals, ask for advice and, most importantly, see if they know anybody who may like to meet you.

Preparedness
Being prepared is a necessary skill for networking, especially when looking for a new job. Getting by on looks and natural charm isn't enough---you need to be prepared to sell yourself. Decide on a few of your proudest professional accomplishments---ones you think would impress potential employers---and practice using them to describe yourself. Practicing this is important because not sounding like you're reciting from a script is an important skill, too.

Another way to demonstrate preparedness is to carry business cards that you can give out to new acquaintances. This not only demonstrates professionalism, but it gives that person the means to contact you---which is exactly what you want.

Confidence
Confidence may be the most crucial skill of all in the unpredictable world of professional networking---especially if it's your first time. Appearing confident in your abilities inspires confidence in others, so don't be shy. Practicing with a friend or family member can help you overcome shyness.

Manners
Being well-mannered is another important skill---not just in networking, but in life. Dressing professionally, using appropriate language, arriving on time and honoring other courtesies leave a good impression on potential employers.
