Resume and Interview Tips

How to Write a Resume for a Tutoring Job
By:Collaborator

Tutors help students improve their academic level by explaining difficult subjects, helping with homework and preparing students for exams and presentations. Most tutors work either for a university or for private test-preparation companies. Many are required to undergo training before they are allowed to work with students. Depending on the employer, you may need a minimum GPA in a specific subject to be able to apply for a tutoring job in that area.

Include your GPA in the resume. This is particularly important if you want to get a tutoring job teaching college or high-school students with exam preparation. Companies that handle tutoring in this area look for people who did extremely well themselves and have the experience and the knowledge to pass on to the students.

Decide what subjects you can be considered an expert on. Even if you did better in some subjects and not so well in others as a student, your college degree and your former work experience probably better prepared you for certain fields. For example, a degree in economics makes you an expert in mathematics, economy and statistics, so you can probably tutor in these areas better than in literature or history.

Let the employer know if you have previous experience as a private tutor. If you don't, consider getting a few students and working with them for a few months before looking for a formal tutoring job. That way, you can write about what your students accomplished, or get letters of reference from satisfied customers.

Decide what type of tutoring you want to do before you write your resume. If you want to work for an online university, for example, you should include references about Internet and computer experience. On the other hand, if you want to work as a tutor for a private exam-preparation company, consider talking about past experiences working with children and teenagers.

Mention any specific skills you have that show you are driven and attentive to detail. This is especially important if you want to tutor difficult subjects, such as algebra or chemistry, where the smallest mistake can completely change the outcome of an exercise.
