TEFL Teaching Interview Tips
By:Collaborator

Applying for TEFL jobs means an interview is on the horizon. If you utilize interview strategies designed to make you stand out from the rest of the applicants, you shouldn't have to go on more than two or three interviews before you are hired for a TEFL position.

Attitude
When schools are searching for Teaching English as a Foreign Language instructors, one of the things they look for is attitude. When English is a foreign language to students, it means that those students are coming from a place in which another language has been used for an entire lifetime. TEFL teachers must present themselves with a can-do attitude and a problem solving mind set. TEFL classes often change from moment to moment. In your interview, your attitude must show that you are ready to change directions at the drop of a hat, that you can handle different attitudes and opinions and that you are open to new ideas. Do not approach an interview for a TEFL position with an attitude that is stilted or stagnant. Schools are looking to find teachers who are flexible and willing to try different strategies to see what works.

Experience
Show that you have experience with the English language and also with foreign languages (if applicable). Although you would benefit from knowing foreign languages, the most important thing for you to present is that you understand what its like to be in a situation where you don't understand the language. Schools are looking for TEFL teachers who can empathize with how students are feeling and with the concerns that they might have. Any situation in which you haven't understood what was going on around you is a good situation to discuss in an interview because it will show that you can relate to students.

Professionalism
Couple your can-do attitude and past experiences with a professional look and demeanor. Dress in a professional manner--it is better to be overdressed than underdressed. Often TEFL teachers are also responsible for teaching about culture, so try to present yourself as someone who embodies the culture you come from in a professional manner. TEFL teachers should look ready to work, professional and yet approachable at the same time. It is a hard line to walk, but success means you will obtain at a teaching position much more quickly.
