Resume and Interview Tips

How to Prepare for a Teacher Interview
By:Elizabeth Stover

In anticipation of your teacher interview, take steps to portray yourself as a confident, relaxed and happy educator. Whether you are a brand new applicant or a seasoned one, administrators and others interviewing you will take in your personality first. The personality you walk into the interview room with gives the interviewer an impression of what students will encounter daily. Put time and effort into preparing so you are ready to walk into the interview exuding confidence.

Create a teacher portfolio to take on job interviews. Buy a quality binder and document protectors for putting it together. The portfolio should include items such as a personal philosophy of education statement, evidence of quality teaching or teacher training, samples of planning and awards or recognitions.

Prepare an appropriate interview outfit. Dress in a tailored, professional style for the interview even if you are teaching elementary and you know that business-casual is expected daily in class. Check all details, including accessories such as shoes.

Anticipate the questions you might be asked and your responses to them. Look online or at your campus teacher education office for sample questions. The teacher interview often takes the form of a team interview rather than a one-on-one situation.

Investigate the campus so that you know something about it during the interview. Look for facts about the campus you might mention during the interview, such as a new library building, innovative practices and student activities. Mention these during an appropriate spot in the interview to show initiative in finding out about your prospective employer.

Prepare questions to ask the interviewer. Show your interest and enthusiasm in the position by asking questions about such items as teacher planning, campus behavior expectations and available resources.
