How to List Teaching Skills on a Resume for Elementary Education
By:Lily J. Tythan

Some teaching candidates are unsure of the best way to list their teaching skills on a resume. While the format you use for your resume determines the specifics of how you list your skills, the general process is easy and straightforward.

Decide between a chronological format or a functional/skills format. A chronological resume begins with your most recent educational or work experience and goes backward. A functional/skills format, on the other hand, has multiple sections designed to highlight your skills or special talents and does not focus as much on education or experience. Either format is acceptable for elementary education.

If you decide to use a chronological format, list relevant teaching skills as bullet points under each educational or work experience. For example, if you indicate you were a student teacher for third grade, include bullet points underneath explaining your classroom management techniques or your small-group instruction for that particular experience. If you choose a functional/skills format, create a specific elementary teaching skills section. In this section, list all of your relevant elementary teaching skills either by a bulleted list or narrative paragraph, whichever you'd prefer.

Use action words when listing your teaching skills. Verbs such as implemented, facilitated, disciplined, encouraged, created or designed are good examples.

Include as many buzzwords as possible. Oftentimes, employers scan resumes into a computer system that scans for particular keyword phrases. In order to ensure that your resume will be seen, include as many educational buzzwords as possible.
