Resume and Interview Tips

Resume Tips - Fix Your Resume Or Start Over?
By:Elton Lowe

At one time or another you've probably written what you thought was a pretty good resume, only to look at it the next day and think, "This is not a good resume!" Hopefully you didn't send it out as soon as you finished it! All that work down the drain. Or is it?

With computers and word processing software, editing a bad resume shouldn't be a big job. There's probably a lot of good information in your bad resume. Just don't let yourself get confused between the bad old stuff and the good new stuff you're going to add when you edit.

Here's something you can try. First, make a new copy of the bad resume on your computer. That way if you make it even worse you can start the edit process all over. Next, enter a lot of empty space at the top of the new resume. About 15 or 20 lines of blank space will do.

Now, think about why your resume is bad. Is the formatting all over the place? Is the spacing awkward? Is it too long? Is it too short? Maybe you don't like the way you phrased the sentences in your job history.

Start cutting the good info from the bad version and pasting it at the top of the new version. Add more empty space between the two versions as you go along. If there's a line you don't like, paste it into the good version and rewrite it. Once you're done, review the whole thing to make sure it's readable and it flows.

Just like a painter or sculptor, it helps to have a model. Search for resume examples on the internet and pattern your structure and sentences after the ones you like. There are many free templates available for download, as well. Using one of those is almost like filling in the blanks. Just structure your good information into the design of the template.

If you want to fix your resume, all it takes is a little effort and thought. Don't throw away good work. Just put a little polish on it to make it better.
