Resume Tips and Making a Great Resume

Your job resume is the document that outlines your work skills and goes on to record your job experience to potential employers that you either apply to or wish to employ you.

Despite what employers tell us, great resumes are the most effective way we have to sell our skills, and there are plenty of reference materials that you can use to write a better resume. Invest some time in how to write a good resume and keep it short and error-free. Remember it is not an autobiography, so keep it short and sweet, to the point. Also make sure it contains your correct contact details and your work experience and job skills must be verifiable as potential employers or their agents will check.

Obviously there are many things to be aware of, and many resources are available to help in making a resume, but I want to cover a few resume tips that are important.

Now that there are many discriminatory items that are not necessary in a functional resume these days, I would encourage you to only omit those things that you feel most strongly about. I believe we all should wear things like age as a badge of honor. Personally I liked to hire people with good experience for important jobs. However you should be aware that you do not have to provide personal information other than you contact details. However, please be sure to include citizenship details if you come from some other country as there are laws covering this aspect of any employment contract.

Personally, I like to see a chronological work history, but you can just list the positions you think give you the best chance at the job. Be wary of the questions that will be asked regarding the gaps in your history, again I like to see this issue covered in the application. If you have an extended gap in your employment, helping look after your children or parents is always an old chestnut. It is important to properly plan this strategy.

Try to have the covering letter or job resume "sell" what you can do for the prospective employer as this is really all that they are really interested in. Ensure that the resume is well written and shows clear priorities to the prospective employer that you are the person for the job.

The page layout will assist the prospective employer properly read your resume. Use clearly defined headings, a 12 point font, bullet points, bold text to emphasize important details, and double spacing. Number all pages. Only use high quality paper, some people will tell you to use recycled paper, but my experience is that this looks tardy. The standard job resume will be, on average three to four pages long with a concise covering letter, so you will probably find yourself needing to cut many details out. Have these written down to take to the job interview; - this will be where the detail is "fleshed" out. Read, proof read, and then read again to ensure there are no errors. Be wary of spellcheckers, they make mistakes.
