Resume and Interview Tips

Interview Tips for Getting a Job
By:Kat Consador

You have just landed an interview and you're one step closer to your dream job. We all want a successful job interview. The path to getting the job takes solid preparation and practice. By knowing interview tips for getting a job, edge out the competition and lock in that golden opportunity.

Preparation
According to CNN, half of all hiring managers claim that the biggest mistake at a job interview is dressing inappropriately. Be sure to conduct research and dress in a clean and professional manner. Men, look for a well-fitting professional suit. Women can also wear a professional suit with pants or a knee-length skirt. Keep skirts at knee length. They can also wear a crisp blouse and/or vest or cardigan. However, avoid low-cut tops, short hemlines, and open-toe shoes. Keep makeup and hair clean and professional.

Do research and know exactly what the position for the company is. Most research can be conducted from your home computer. Find out qualifications, tasks, and duties that correspond with the specific position. Also research the company's history and culture. Visit the location ahead of time to prevent getting lost right before the job interview.

Practice
Alleviate the nervousness of venturing into unfamiliar terrain through practice. Get comfortable with a firm handshake and make eye contact. Expect to hear staple interview questions, as follows:

What's your biggest strength? What's your biggest weakness? Why do you want to work here? Tell me about yourself?

You may be confronted with tricky behavioral questions. These questions expect specific answers. Such behavioral questions could include the following:

Tell me about a specific situation where you went above and beyond for a customer. Describe a time when you made a mistake and tell me what you learned from this mistake?

Follow Up
After the job interview, follow up with a professional thank-you note through the mail. Also, within 24 hours, write an appreciative e-mail thanking your interviewer for the interview. These strategies will not be overlooked and could be just what you need to edge out the competitor.
