Resume and Interview Tips

Job Interview Tips for Students
By:Meeghan Davis

A job interview can be a stressful experience if you are not prepared. By giving yourself the time to update your personal appearance, work on interview techniques and improve your resume, you will feel prepared and confident for your job interview. You have already accomplished getting the interview. Now it is time to work on a few simple details in order to get the job.

Appearance
First impressions are priceless. You truly need to dress to impress for an interview. The best color for an interview suit is navy blue. A black suit will work as well. Make sure your shoes look well-kept. If you need to get out some shoe polish, do it the night before the interview. Hair needs to be styled in a way that looks professional. Keep your hair out of your face. Fingernails need to be cut and clean. Females need to wear makeup in neutral colors. This is not the time for facial glitter and shades of blue and green eye shadow. Jewelry should be kept to a minimum. Men can wear a watch and wedding or class rings. Any facial piercings need to be taken out before the interview.

Non-Verbal Communication
What you don't say in an interview is just as important as what you do say. Make sure you have a strong, firm handshake. Practice your handshake with family and friends before the interview. Posture is very important as well. In order to keep a good posture, sit with both feet touching the ground. Keep your back straight and head held high. Do not fidget. You may want to do a mock interview with a friend before the big day. Tell your friend to watch for facial tics and fidgety movements. Work on correcting this before the interview. Always make good eye contact. Interviewers feel they can trust you if you continue to look them in the eye. Looking down and away will tell an interviewer that you lack self confidence or are being dishonest.

Resume
Double- and triple-check your resume for errors. Most interviewers already will have a copy of your resume from an online application. They will, however, expect you to bring a copy to the interview. Bring in several copies of fresh, clean, non-crumpled resumes. You may be interviewing with more than one person. Before the interview, look over your resume to reacquaint yourself with your previous work experience. You will most likely be asked to give examples of accomplishments in these positions. This is where you need to sell yourself. They liked the resume version of you before the interview. Complement your resume with additional positive details about your education and experience, when asked.
