Resume and Interview Tips

How to Make a Comprehensive Resume
By:R.L. Cultrona

The most important part of any job search is the resume. This piece of paper is sent to all potential employers and lays out all of your experience. The key to getting the job interview is to comprehensively detail all of your core competencies and work experience while keeping the resume to 2 pages or fewer. Writing a comprehensive resume can seem like an art form, but luckily it is one which is learned easily.

Type your contact information at the top of the page. This should include your name, address, phone number, e-mail address, and any websites you run. Your name should stand out from this.

List your core competencies as bullet points under your contact information. Describe what you are good at and what experience you bring to the jobs you are applying to. You could also type a few sentences about your experience.

List out your jobs, their locations, your titles, and what you did there. Use action verbs to describe your role and duties at each company you worked for. Make it sound exciting and action oriented. Only place duties you did which pertain to the job for which you are applying. You need to list your jobs from the most recent to your earliest.

List out any certifications you hold and any software with which you are familiar. If you have several years with specialized software, list the duration you have worked with the program in question.

List out any volunteer experience you have which may pertain to the job you seek. Finally, list your education levels and the dates you graduated.

Tips:

You don't have to list every job you ever had or every school you attended. List the last three or four jobs you held and focus on them. You can also just list any higher education you have received, from bachelor's degree on up.

Never lie on you resume. Not only is it unethical, the dates can be checked and your integrity will be called into question if it is found out.
