Motivation Tips

How Do You Keep Yourself Motivated? You Already Are!
By:Martin R Crowther

Have you spent years looking for that perfect system that will either drive you to success, wealth and love only to be disappointed by the promises of ‘those who have gone before’ who ,having spent years searching, now have the ‘perfect formula’ to sell to you? It does not matter which ‘magic’ system you use to create confidence in your life or yourself because I am confident they all work equally well. Okay, so maybe not equally but this is where we get technical and I have contradict myself. They often do not work because of a lack of persistence and consistency? So, how to persist?

If you’ve persisted so far with trying to find a system that works for you then you may have progressed further than you think. If you are about to give up, don’t just yet. Whether you believe that you can create your own reality through the power of your mind or think that it is all psychological the results are just the same. Your beliefs create the basic foundation of who you are and what you do so whichever way you look at it – it does not actually matter what you believe. We just need to do something about it. We need to take action, we need to persist and we need to remain constant. I say ‘we’ because I am working on it as hard as anyone. That is why I am writing this article in the first place.

To persevere we need to maintain our focus and look to the future. This can be done by setting goals and keeping the end in sight. This can work well unless ‘the end’ becomes the target of frustration and then we need to let it go and just get on with things. Our focus and effort needs to be maintained regularly so we can see past the obstacles that get in our way, but what about the obstacles we are often unaware of until we have given up completely?

We generally do not become aware of breaking our promises to ourselves until we have broken it. Once we have broken that promise we lose a little of that commitment to persevere, and when we lose enough we no longer commit to keeping that promise. And every time we check the bank of negativity we gain negative interest. We have to stop banking that loss of commitment, let it go, set the balance to zero and focus back on the goal. That way if and when you break that promise to yourself again you do not discover the bank almost full and give up completely.

When we bring our focus back to our goals then we ARE being consistent, we are still moving in the right direction, and we will continue to get better at it the more positive we are and the less we check the bank of negativity. I personally keep myself positive by regularly reading positive and affirming books and articles. These can be eBooks you can open at work when you have a few minutes between tasks and calls, daily email reminders, or a real book you can carry around with you. It all depends on how much time you think you have and when you think you have it. If you do not think you have any time then I suggest creating some and investing it in yourself.

If you have not already begun then you need to take action and just do it. Now! Get a piece of paper that you can carry with you. Any will do. Choose one thing you would like to change, and list one thing you can do now. Or not do now, but do not phrase negatively. For example instead of giving up/quitting smoking (feel free to add your own idea here) be active and release or relinquish the [negative habit] or even abandon [the unwanted habit] if that feels like a positive action to you. (I have worked at sea so I see abandoning as a positive thing as I would not want to go down with the ship.) Finally list another thing that you can either do early tomorrow, or regularly, and if you haven’t already list your target goal. Keep this with you to remind you what you are doing.

Do not hold on to or dismiss too quickly any perceived ‘failure’. Just release it. It is both the easiest thing in the world to do, and yet the hardest when your thoughts and emotions get involved. Feel how hard it can be to change when your emotions get involved. Take a moment to examine them and you may begin to see the world in a new way. Let negative emotions go and refocus on the emotions of who and where you want to be. You may not find yourself instantly at your goal but you can break even on the distance instantly.

Redefine how you see things. Realise that as long as you are not breaking whatever it is that you are promising to yourself then you are moving towards your goal. Seen from this point of view you are only breaking your promise to yourself while you are actually breaking your promise. A smoker is not technically defined until s/he actually lights a cigarette, stop defining yourself as ‘this’ or ‘that’ and stop defining others if that highlights the issue.

Remember I said that it does not matter what you believe? It does, however, help to know what you do believe. If you have no motivation or interest in getting started then quite simply, you won’t. Take the time to look at what motivates and interests you and you can use that to your advantage to move yourself on to better things. Skipping this step is often why it takes people many years to ‘create’ their own system rather than focusing on and using just one that you can invest genuine interest and effort. Find a system that you can believe in and align to. If later you disagree with the parts do not write the whole system off just yet, see if you can reword or replace them and continue. If you lose faith in the system completely then see if you can take from it some knowledge or a tool that you can make use of and move on but do not give up. You are creating your own system using what you feel comfortable with believing whether it comes pre-packaged or not.

If you are in need of further inspiration one of many ebooks I am using to keep myself motivated is How to Create Reality by Mark Ivar Myhre. Feel free to check it out and let me know what you think at my blog.
