Lessons & Classroom Games for Teachers

Christmas Word Games
By:Teresa Evans

Christmas word games are a great way to entertain kids in the lead up to Christmas. Not only are they great fun for the kids but they are also games that are educational too. There are many different Christmas word games that the kids can play and some of them are simple games that only require a pencil and paper.

Here are a few Christmas word games that you might like to try with the kids. These are fun kids' Christmas activities that can be used with a small group or a large group of children. They are also ideal as Christmas classroom games that teachers can use with their class.

Christmas Hangman
Everyone knows the spelling game, Hangman, but did you know that this traditional word game can also become a Christmas game if Christmas words are used. You can also change the hangman diagram to a diagram of a Christmas tree and the game can then be called 'Christmas Tree'. Once the Christmas tree diagram has been agreed upon, play in the traditional way using words like presents, Santa, sleigh and reindeer.

Christmas Sentence Hangman
A more interesting version of this game is to use a sentence instead of single words. Firstly create a Christmas related sentence, for example, Santa is stuck in our chimney. Next draw the dashes for each letter across the page or the board leaving a space between each word. The game is now played in the usual way with letters being placed on the dashes when guessed correctly.

Christmas Jumble
Another game that only requires pencil and paper is Christmas Jumble. For this game you will need a list of words related to Christmas. The letters for each word are then jumbled up and written in a Christmas shape. The aim of the game is to be the first one to guess the word.

The game can be played with 5 or 6 Christmas trees being drawn and the letters for a different word being put into each tree. It can then become a race to see who can work out all of the Christmas words first.

Christmas Down and Up
If you want Christmas word games that are quite challenging then you'll like this Christmas game that will get kids really thinking. The letters for a Christmas word are written going down the page. The same word is then written beside this with the letters going up the page leaving a space between the letters on each row. If the word 'Santa' is used the first row would have S_A and the second row would have A_T. Players have to try to make five words that start and end as written on each row. They can add one or more letters in the space to make the word. The first player to make the five words is the winner.

There are many different Christmas word games that you can play with kids. The best part is that these fun kids' Christmas activities are also educational so the kids can be learning while they have fun!
