Lessons & Classroom Games for Teachers

ESL Game #1 - Tic Tac Toe
By:Joe Tosczak

To play Tic Tac Toe in class is very easy.

But to be able to play Tic Tac Toe in class and still be teaching English at the same time is the tricky part.

Any and every new ESL teacher will eventually find themselves playing game such as Tic Tac Toe with the class - because they do not know what else they can do.

Luckily, there is this article...

No matter what happens in the class you can always fall back on asking every student in the class one question. After every student answers one question ~ then you can play Tic Tac Toe.

For example:

A bad teacher would just play this game and not ask any English questions; and you are an ENGLISH TEACHER - you are paid money to teach them English and not just play games with them.

A good teacher would ask all of the students to stand up. He would then tell the students that they can sit down after they have answered one question correctly.

The questions that you would ask your class vary on the students level and the subject which you are teaching; but here are some questions that can be used in almost any class:

"What did you do yesterday?"
"Where do you want to go?"
"Why do you want to go there?"
"What is your favorite food and why?"
"What is your favorite color and tell me 5 things which are that color."
"Who is your best friend?"
" What is your favorite TV show about?"
