How to Teach English to a Taiwanese Child
By:Flora Richards-Gustafson

A Taiwanese child is always at the right age to learn English or any other new language. It has been scientifically proven that young brains are more easily able to learn and process different languages than adult brains. This fact, combined with the desire to learn, makes an ideal situation for one to teach English to a Taiwanese child.

Before You Begin

Measure the Taiwanese child's knowledge and comprehension of the English language. Many children already know bits and pieces of foreign languages, but may not be old enough to read or write: these scenarios need to be taken into consideration. Evaluating what the child already knows will help you know how advanced he is, and help you plan your lessons.

Let the Taiwanese child know she can succeed at learning English, even if she may not understand you, and continue to be encouraging. Celebrate small achievements and thank the student for her participation. A child will be more willing to learn English if she has self-confidence.

Plan your lessons accordingly.

Build Vocabulary First

Build upon the amount of knowledge the Taiwanese child has of the English language. He may have had a lot of Western influences and may be able to relate to certain items, toys, foods and characters seen on TV. If the child knows what "pizza" is, break down the components of the food item for them. Explain, for example, what part of the pizza is called "cheese", "bread", and so on.

Use flash cards. Show the child a picture of a bear on a flash card and say "bear", so she can associate the word with the object. If you have one available, grab a teddy bear so the child can make the connection again. Do this with several objects the child is familiar with, including common rooms and areas of a home, articles of clothing, school supplies, toys, family members, and such.

Incorporate fun songs into your lessons. Children do well with patterns and will retain information learned in songs. The song "Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes" is a song that not only has a catchy tune, but also gets a child physically moving as he points to the body parts in the song. This method incorporates learning styles helpful to visual, auditory and tactile learners.

Build Grammar Skills Later

Go slowly. Grammar in the English language is hard to learn, especially for a Taiwanese child who is used to her more user-friendly style. Take things slowly, but don't be afraid to give correction or praise.

Use videos and books. Children will need to hear correct grammar usage in English in order to learn it. Books and educational videos made for children are good resources that incorporate fun, learning, reading, watching and hearing how grammar is used.

Talk, talk, talk; a Taiwanese child will only improve his English with practice.
