How to Use American Sign Language (ASL) to Teach English to Foreign Learners
By:Elizabeth (Lisa)Thompson

Educators who teach English as a Second Language (ESL) to foreign language learners use a variety of ways to help students grasp vocabulary and grammar concepts. One way to assist children, and sometimes adults, incorporates using American Sign Language (ASL) to help students learn English. The combination of motion and verbal communication imprints the new English word into the child's brain by helping him connect the word with an action that holds meaning in his native tongue.

Teach students the English alphabet and the corresponding signs for each letter. Say the letter and make the sign at the same time.

Use visuals to teach words, such as posters, picture books and videos. Sign and say the word as you show the picture.

Use hands-on activities with ESL students, as opposed to just using lectures. For example, during the Fall, take a walk and collect fallen leaves, decorate pumpkins, or reenact a play of the Pilgrims and Indians to involve the children. As you sign during these activities, children will continue to connect ASL to English.
