Yep, I was thwarted by the need to produce a birth certificate during the process to get my wife a settlement visa for the UK; however, it turned out very easy, I just ordered one on line and it arrived by post in China certainly before the end of a fortnight. I don't know why they asked to see it because they (the embassy) definitely didn't want my birth certificate when I applied for the certificate of "no impedance" I think it was called, necessary for the Chinese authorities to prove you haven't still got a wife in Blighty. I just googled, birth cert online UK to get one-but if you want to use the same people as I did I'll dig it out for you.

It really is frighteningly easy to get married to a Chinese girl. My American friend decided after I got wed "what's good for the goose....." and followed suit; however, yanks have a bit more trouble, as they have to both go to US embassy at an appointed time to swear an affidavit, something like that.

So, as it was three years ago, no BC needed to get wed but needed to get her visa. Both The American and British embassies tell you on their websites what they want and they don't leave anything out. Fish and Chip shop near Beijing embassy-don't go there it tastes all slimy and horrible.
