Belize - One of the Best Countries to Retire
By:Stephanie Hofstetler

How many people do you know have heard of the country called Belize? Honestly, I have never heard of the Caribbean country until now. So I started to do a little research and so should you.

But once you start researching about the country, which is said to be about 8,867 square mile total land area and has a rich and interesting culture, then it would slowly grow on you.

This is probably just one of the many reasons why it would be a good place for people, especially those who have lived and worked in cold countries most of their lives, to visit and may be, just maybe, decide to retire.

Those old bones would need a warm climate to keep their arthritis at bay.

Even if you're a "No, habla Espanol" or cannot speak Spanish, you would not need to worry that you would have communication problems since English is the official language, thanks to the British who colonized them in the 1600s.

On top of this the country, which sits beside Mexico and Guatemala, also offers difficult to refuse incentives to retirees who would be choosing Belize as their second home. It offers certain tax-free exemptions and incentive to Qualified Retired Persons (QRP).

It has been trying to woo people from North America and the United Kingdom, who they hope would decide to put residences and bring in dollars to boost their economy.

The government decided to tie up its laws on retirements to its Ministry of Tourism as part of its marketing strategy. They could easily include QRP in promoting the country and make it more accessible to interested foreigners.

Those who have decided to settle down in Belize, they would be entitled to a one-time opportunity to import some of their property duty free.

So if for example you would want to bring in your newly-purchased Porsche Cayman S Sport car or your luxurious yacht which you probably named Marilyn (after the 1950 sex goddess of Hollywood Marilyn Monroe), or pieces of home furniture that you could not absolutely part with because of its sentimental connections with your great, great grandmother - then the you could always avail of the tax free offer.

And if there is a need for you to return to civilization, well it is just two hours away from three major gateways of the United States.

Since the eastside of the country faces the Caribbean, it would probably be a good place for those slow walks along the coastline or do your morning exercises.

Oh and in case I forgot to tell you, since Belize has such a small population, it would not be crowded, and there would probably be times when you would have the sea, the sun and the shore all to yourself...
