Exploring the Dominican Republic: Puerto Plata

The Dominican Republic is known for its exotic beautiful beaches, wonderful weather, and exciting nightlife. Chances are you will devote quite a bit of time to enjoying the area's enjoyable features and attractions if you get a chance to live in or visit the Dominican Republic. In fact, many people feel that living or working in this area is almost like being on vacation every day of the week. Although there are plenty of tourist areas you can visit in the Dominican Republic, it can also be nice to visit a few of the more out-of-the-way locations. In addition to escaping the hordes of tourists, the prices can also be more affordable in these areas. Puerto Plata is one of these areas that you should definitely visit.

Beautiful Unspoiled Beaches

As compared to many of the more crowded beaches, this region has beaches that are relatively unspoiled. The Playa Grande is a long and beautiful beach, perfect if you want to surf, swim or just lay in the sun. Just outside of Puerto Plata, you'll also find the Playa Dorada beach. Of course, you could also just set out and explore on your own, since the entire area is basically a coastal beach paradise.

Water sports are another way to enjoy some time on the beach. If you love surfing, you'll love the beaches of Puerto Plata. Windsurfing, kitesurfing and wakeboarding are all popular water sports in the area. In fact, surfers come from all areas to enjoy the Dominican Republic waves.

The "High Life" for Less

As compared to the cost of other areas, Puerto Plata can actually be quite a bargain. If you're looking to enjoy some vacation time, check out the area's five-star resorts, which feature affordable all-inclusive prices. There are also golf courses to enjoy, such as the Grande Golf Course or the Dorada Golf Course. In addition to great golfing, you'll also get a chance to enjoy spectacular ocean views while you play. The area also has a wide variety of bars and discos to keep you entertained after the sun goes down. All of the area's resorts of course have their own clubs and bars. In most cases, you can purchase a day pass even if you are not actually staying at the resort. There are also plenty of smaller nightclubs to enjoy, allowing you to experience plenty of beachside nightlife.

Culture and Music

Puerto Plata also provides plenty of culture and music to enjoy. If you plan to visit in June, try to be in the area during the third week of the month. The entire week is filled with music and culture during a week-long cultural festival. You'll enjoy folk, jazz, blues and meringue concerts, in addition to traditional dancing troupes. If you plan to visit in November, don't miss the Dominican Jazz Festival. This festival always provides a great time, since it attracts some of the top international talent. If you are essentially a kid at heart, the International Sand Castle Competition is held in the area in February, which can be a lot of fun to watch.
