The Coastal City of Portmore, Jamaica

If you are living or teaching in Jamaica, you'll probably find yourself in Portmore at one point or another. Although this relatively new city is not considered to be one of Jamaica's popular tourist towns, it is quite important from a housing standpoint. In fact, if you plan to work or teach in the Kingston area, you could possibly plan on living in Portmore. The city started out as a dormitory town, and in fact is still the Caribbean's largest dormitory town. However, it has since expanded into a major housing area, with many of the people working in the Kingston area making the commute from Portmore to Kingston every day. Although this city might seem quite utilitarian, it actually can be a great area to visit.

The History of Portmore

Portmore was actually built on land that is primarily reclaimed swamp area. In the latter part of the 1960s, this area was earmarked as a primary development site for residential housing development. Additional housing in this area was greatly needed, because Kingston was over-populated. It was finally recognized as an official municipality of Jamaica in 2003, which means it now has its own city government structure, including a mayor and city council. It is estimated that Portmore is home to approximately 10% of the Kingston area's population. Today, it is considered to be Kingston's "suburb city," with many people living in Portmore but working or going to school in Kingston. There is bus service between Portmore and nearby Spanish Town and Kingston. The Portmore Toll Road is also a primary highway utilized by commuters traveling from Portmore to Kingston.

Things to See and Do in Portmore

Jamaica does not advertise Portmore as a primary tourist destination, since it is primarily a housing area. However, this does not mean that there are not great places where you can go to eat, relax and enjoy the sights. You'll find good hotels, fine restaurants and beaches to enjoy in Portmore. Horse racing is a popular sport, which can be enjoyed at Caymanas Park in north Portmore on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The city is also home to Portmore United F.C., which is a professional soccer team.

Beaches in Portmore

As would be expected in Jamaica, you'll be able to find beaches in Portmore. Port Henderson Beach, which is located in the southeastern area of Portmore, is worth a visit. At the east end of the beach, you'll find Links Pon De Beach, an enjoyable beach park. If you're looking for some tasty Jamaican fair and snack foods, you'll find both here. At the Port Henderson Beach's east end, you'll find Port Henderson. There you can see some great examples of architecture from the 18th and 19th century, such as the Rodney Arms restaurant. Further up the hill from Rodney Arms you will find the Apostles Battery, the ruins of an old gun emplacement. You'll be able to view the old battery, fort and cannon, providing a glimpse back to the area's past. If you visit Apostles Battery at sunset, you'll really enjoy the beautiful view of Kingston from across the harbor.
