What is the Best Way to Learn a New Language?
By:John Doey

There are many methods to learn a new language. Some of them are more effective, some are less effective. You can spend two years learning and still not speak a new language or you can spend six months learning and speak fluently. What is the best way to learn a new language?

The best way to learn to speak a new language is actually... trying to speak it right from the beginning. "But what if I don't know any vocabulary, what if people don't understand me?" Wait, don't worry - I'll give you an easy guide step by step. Here it is:

First step - beginning

Find something which will teach you every basic word, phrase, some basic grammar and so on. It can be an audio course, it can be a phrasebook or a handbook. Phrasebooks don't teach grammar so you should look for something else to learn grammar from. Also, remember that handbooks usually don't teach the correct pronunciation. That's why I believe that an audio course is the best option.

But you can also find something for free online if you search hard enough. However, I strongly recommend premium products since they are usually more professional and complex. But if you don't have much money to spend - don't worry, take some time and you should find something useful for free.

Second step - learning process

Learn as much as possible. Repeating is very important, especially at the beginning. Make sure that you know every basic phrase like "how are you doing", "what is the time" and so on and then move on to more difficult phrases. After a few weeks/months (depending on how much time you will spend learning) you should have a strong foundation and achieve intermediate level in a new language. Don't be scared to speak as much as you can in every situation! Speaking right from the beginning is very important.

Third step - total immersion

The last step, and the most important, is to begin total immersion. What does that mean? Start reading as many texts in the target language as you can. It can be a newspaper, magazine, comic, book. Start listening to the music in the target language, start watching movies and TV series in the target language, find a native speaker who is interested in a language exchange, participate in online communities like message boards, social networking sites and so on. You can also travel to a country where the official language is your target language. This is the most effective method.
The point of this all is to experience the real spoken language as often as you can.

If you want fourth step, here it is: enjoy conversations in a new language! Learning a new language isn't a rocket science - it's simple but it requires some work. So, practice regularly and practice a lot and you'll eventually become fluent. I can guarantee it. Good luck!
