4 Mistakes to Avoid While Learning Spanish
By:John Doey

If you want to learn Spanish (or any other foreign language), there are a lot of mistakes which you will make. Some of these mistakes are not so important and some of these mistakes are very serious and you should avoid them. What are these serious mistakes? Here they are!

1. Unnecessary use of personal pronouns

In English, using "I", "you", "we" and so on is obligatory. In Spanish, these words should be omitted since the verb itself identifies the subject. A pronoun is only needed when you refer to a third person or when you want to emphasize a subject, for example the fact that you speak English but someone else speaks Spanish. Native speakers will understand you if you use too many pronouns but you will sound like a beginner. If you don't want to sound like a beginner, learn how to use personal pronouns.

2. Omitting articles

Articles (a/an, the) are important in English and they are also important in Spanish. You must learn proper articles and learn when to use them to sound more natural. Native speakers will probably understand you if you omit articles but it's the same as with pronouns - you will sound like a newbie.

3. Ignoring correct pronunciation

Spanish isn't super difficult when it comes to pronunciation but you can say something way different if you don't know the proper pronunciation of a given word. Native speakers may not understand you if you don't put stress on the correct syllable or roll your "r's". Also, be careful when it comes to n. You can say something really weird if you say "Tengo 25 anos" instead of "Tengo 25 anos" (with Spanish "n", like "anyos"). Check this on your own.

This is a really good example.

4. Being afraid of making mistakes

Everyone learns from his mistakes and you shouldn't be afraid that you say something stupid or funny. Try hard and don't be let down - practice makes perfect! Michael Jordan said: "I've failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed". It's the same with Spanish - you will make a lot of mistakes but eventually you will become fluent if you try hard enough!

Eliminate these mistakes and your Spanish should improve very quickly. If you really want to learn Spanish, you will learn it.

And if you are only willing to practice regularly, you can greatly improve your Spanish. ¡Buena suerte!
