Guess what? Alot of English teachers in Asia ARE rejects from the western world. Often quite young, maybe too young, in a foreign country where mommy and daddy and the neighbors can't witness their deeds, these folks push the limits of personal behavior a bit too far, certainly farther than they would at home. If and when they finally get into irreversible trouble its chalked up to a "growing experience" and eventually ignored. Unless they get tossed in jail, and the family back home cries out for justice.
Often the local students go to language centers looking for English classes to improve their English, as continuing education in their careers. Having a solid grip on English puts them ahead of the competition in their own work world, giving them more chances at moving up the ladder of success.
They pay money out of their own pocket, take time out of their week away from their families, and hope they meet a teacher with some experience in teaching and in the business world, is a decent person, and gives some quality instruction.
Can we blame them if they are disappointed with some of us? Often we as foreign teachers dress like slobs, use poor personal behavior when students (clients) are around, are not experienced or trained in our field, and are thoroughly lacking in professionalism.
If the tables were turned and I witnessed the same, I would be disappointed, and eventually hostile, also.
Maybe those who are "doing the TEFL thing to put some cash in the bank" need to think it over again. Thats not the point. There are more effective ways of getting cash in the bank at home. Maybe being a TEFL is a good way for ALL of us to work on our professional AND personal behaviors, to develop the ability to provide high quality customer service, which develops good business sense.
Maybe better business sense than the "teachers" that were in the ilicit drug import business.
