Personal Statement

I have been a teacher of English for 30 years, venturing into work as an article writer and editor from 2003 to 2006 for two Islamic publishers on their websites, and a temporary lecturer of American and British literature and Culture from 1998-99. I have also supervised ESL summer school in the summer of 1999. My most recent research has been into Muslims in Britain and the phenomenon of “Muslim Speak”. That is, the way Muslims use words in English, both adopted from the English language and from languages abroad such as Arabic and Urdu.

Lately, I have become interested in chaplaincy work and I am currently earning a Certificate of Muslim Chaplaincy, which includes 60 hours of placement as a trainee chaplain. I want to apply the knowledge and skills I have acquired in the UK. However, I am fully aware that the post of Muslim chaplain is often voluntary.

Therefore, with my extensive experience as in TEFL, I am also looking for work teaching online, or teaching or supervising ESOL courses, both for overseas students who want to study in the UK and to immigrants seeking permanent residence through the British Citizenship Test. Preferably, I would like to combine both these roles in an institute of further or of higher education.

I am also able to offer my services as an IELTS examiner. My cooperative work ethic, my liberal sharing of ideas and materials, my respect for confidentiality, and my determination to see things through makes me a desirable candidate for any position, but I am most interested in developing my interest in sociolinguistics, Islamic language and Islamic chaplaincy and counselling.

I will also consider work for any Muslim or theological organization outside the above parameters, especially in the field of comparative religion. I have written several articles published on the web. I wish to further my research into Islam, Muslims, and comparative theology, teaching as I learn.
