Whether it is learning about irregular verbs or performing a sonnet in front of your fellow students, English class can be a challenging course for some students. Despite the intensive nature of English class with literature reviews, comparison and contrast essays as well as multiple requirements, the subject matter itself is an important part of any high school education in the United States. For students wanting to improve their English grade, boosting their comprehension and skill requires the right combination of studying and drive.

1

Review previous assignments and projects to identify the areas where you need help. As you identify what parts of your English course's curriculum are difficult for you, create a list of topics you can use as a reference for what you need to study.

2

Discuss the topic list with your instructor. By keeping your teacher informed about your goals, you are not only showing your professor that you are dedicated to doing better, but you are also opening yourself up to any tips or help that your teacher may offer you.

3

Set up a study plan and set aside at least an additional hour a day to work on English class. For example, if preparing for a large test on sentence structure, use your study sessions to read your textbook and English reference manual. Supplement your studying by completing online practice worksheets and tests. Keep a list of questions that develop while you are studying. Bring those to your teacher for further explanation.

4

Join a study group. With the opportunity to work with other students on English class materials, study groups are an effective method to bolster the studying efforts you are doing on your own. In addition to group support, the set times and schedule that come with a study group can help keep you on task as you work to improve your English grade.

5

Contact a tutor. Depending on your learning style or academic ability, working one-on-one with a tutor may be the key component for you to improve your English grades.
