Oftentimes, those learning English as a second language, or ESL, have problems with idiomatic expressions. Jokes are the hardest, but idiomatic expressions rank a close second. The verb "get" is misused and abused. Let's fix that at least to an extent. Because if you can get a handful of idiomatic expressions down pat, people will begin to view you differently. They will see that you are making great strides with your new language.

GET IT out of your head
This is used when something isn't worth the time or effort.
1) Sample: She left you. She's not worth it. You need to get her out of your head.

When you have no money and you are in a shoe store.
1) Sample: Are you thinking of buying those shoes? How can you do that when you have no money? You need to get THAT out of your head!

To GET ahead
Often, this idiom is used in reference to money, or wanting to get money.
1) Sample: I need to work harder so that I can make more money and get ahead in life.

Or, sometimes it may be used when you're telling a story and you jump to the end before you tell all of the beginning. So, you may confuse the listeners.
1) Sample: Okay, Frank. You need to slow down a bit. Start from the beginning. You're getting ahead of yourself.

To GET along without
This expression is used quite frequently by Americans when speaking English. It can show importance or dependency.

1) Sample: He can't get along without his television.
2) Sample: Without tortillas, he just can't get along.
3) Sample: He needs that Bible. Just can't get along without it.

Idiomatic expressions, like with the verb "get", can add flavor to the spoken tongue. As you learn English, use them in your everyday life. It will make learning more fun. And it will turn some heads! Oops! There was another one!
