Human Environment
Long History The fertile plain area in addition to springs and rivers have cultivated the long history and culture of Shijiazhuang City, which is recorded in a hundred Yangshao cultural relics, 50 Longshan culturalrelics and the unearthedrelics from Zhongshan State site. Here hasdiscovered the first silk fabric and brewing workshop in the world, which shows that the city used to be one of the commercial and industrial centers in history. Zhao Tuo, king of Nanyue, Zhao Zilong fromChangshan and Wei Zheng, famous prime minister in Tang Dynasty, are household names in China. In modern history, as the birthplace of New China, Xibaipo in Pingshan County has seen the spectacular history of the rising ofShijiazhuangand the founding of People's Republic of China.

Raising of the City In the early 20th century, the building of Peking?DHankou railway (now known as Beijing?DGuangzhou railway) and Zhengding?DTaiyuan railway (now known as Shijiazhuang?DTaiyuan railway) has resulted in the formation and development of Shijiazhuang city. From 1925 onward Shijiazhuang was called Shimen, which became a city in 1939. On November 12, 1947, Shijiazhuang was liberated, one of the first large cities taken from Kuomintang. In 1968 the provincial capital of Hebei was transferred from Baoding to Shijiazhuang and since then the latter has become the economic, financial, political, technological, cultural and information center in the province. Since the reform and opening up, Shijiazhuang people exhibit the vigor and vitality to expedite development, revitalize the city and enrich the residents. Catching up with the trend of globally economic competition, they have made brilliant achievements. So far Shijiazhuang has become one of the major cities in northern China that has distinct economic features, strong leading industries, high living standards, and broad development prospects.

The six districts are: Chang'an, Qiaodong, Qiaoxi, Xinhuaelopment zone is named Shijiazhuang High and New Technology Industrial Development Zone.

Geographical Location
Shijiazhuang is located on the middle south of North China Plain, 114°29′east longitude and 38°04′north latitude. With Beijing and Tianjin on the north, Bohai Sea and North China Oilfield on the east, Taihang Mountain and Shanxi Province (the coal base in China) on the west, the city enjoys advantageous geographic position, with the nickname of “A key city in Hebei and Shanxi linking north and south.”

Natural Environment
Landforms and Topography Shijiazhuang covers two geomorphic units: Taihang Mountain and North China Plain. The western region is situated in the middle part of Taihang Mountain at the sea level of about 1,000 meters. The high mountainous region takes up 50% of the total urban area. The eastern region is on the alluvial plain of Hutuo River, part of North China Plain, with the sea level ranging from 30 to 100 meters.
Climatic Features The climate in Shijiazhuang is of temperate continental type, with distinct division of four seasons. The annual average temperature is 14.2℃. In terms of monthly average temperature, the lowest is in January, －2.9℃, and the highest is in July about 26.5℃. The average rainfall in a normal year is 570mm. The sunshine duration is about 2,200 hours a year, and the annual frost-free period is 240 days.
