Located in Huaibei, a newly developed city of energy and industry in the northern part of the Anhui Province, Huaibei Coal Industry Teachers' College (HCITC) was initially organized mutually by the Central Government and the Anhui Provincial government, with the later significantly involved in the college’s administration. First beginning its development in 1974 from the Huaibei Branch of Anhui Normal University, HCITC received approval by the Central Government's State Educational Council in December 1978 to have its present name Huaibei Coal Industry Teachers' College and fell under the direct administration of the Ministry of Coal Industry. In 1981, HCITC was authorized to confer undergraduate degrees. In 2000, HCITC was successfully awarded the Qualified University through the Undergraduate-education Assessment conducted by the Ministry of Education. In 2003, the State Educational Council's Committee for the Conferment of Academic Degrees granted HCITC permission for the matriculation of Master degrees.

Today, the main campus, located at the foot of the Xiangshan Mountains, has fine scenery consisting of green grass, trees and aromatic flowers. Construction Department of Anhui Province names HCITC “Garden-like Unit of Anhui Province”, for its fine campus is full of humanistic atmosphere. HCITC's main campus currently covers an area of 1,460,000 square meters with the building area of 462,600 square meters. The total value of equipments for teaching and research amounts to 81,670,000 Yuan RMB. The total book collection and the electronic documents reach 1.49 million, and 950,000, respectively.

Currently, there are fifteen departments, forty undergraduate courses, which involve law, economics, education, literatures, history, science, engineering, management and others. There are twenty-one disciplines with Masters degree conferment and one first-level Master degree conferment. By now, more than 1,400 staff members are employed by the college, of which 859 compose the teaching faculty and staff. There are 288 professors, associate professors, about 500 Ph. Ds and M.Ds as well as 3 positions of lecture professors of “Wan-jiang River Scholars”. In addition, the college has a group of pioneering experts, discipline leaders, and young and middle-aged core member teachers. One is elected the state candidate of Talent Project of the New Millennium, conducted by State Personnel Bureau and other 6 ministries or Bureaus. There are 6 provincial-level academic pacesetters, 8 academic tip-top talents, and 27 young and middle-aged academic pacesetters of Anhui Province. Meanwhile, HCITC owns 57 provincial-level young and middle-aged core member teachers, 15 state-level core member teachers and 13 scholars obtaining government allowance.

Currently, this college owns 5 provincial-level key subjects, 3 priority specialties supported by the province, 3 standard disciplines of educational reform, one higher education research base of humanities and sociologies, 8 priority courses supported by the province and 13 provincial-level key courses. At the meantime, 3 provincial Teaching and Experiment Demonstration Centers of Basic Courses, 3 provincial key laboratories and 1 provincial Innovating Team of Science and Technology have been already established.

Scientific research has made considerable progress at Huaibei Coal Industry Teachers College. Since 2004, 153 academic works and teaching materials have been published. Since 2002, the total published academic articles have exceeded over 3,500, of which 160 articles are recorded by SCI, EI, and ISTP. Today HCITC engages in more than 400 scientific research projects of diverse kinds, among of which over 40 come from the State Fund Project of Social Science and the State Fund Project of Natural Science. And 217 projects come from the Province and other relevant Departments of the State. Alumni of HCITC start careers around the whole scope of China. From their competence and talent, HCITC gains public praise among the colleges and universities in Anhui Province.

Both home and abroad, HCITC is active in academic exchanges. It has established intercollegiate cooperative relations with the University of Western Kentucky from the United States and La Trobe University from Australia. It sponsors several academic periodicals such as The Journal of HCITC (versions of Philosophy and Social Science and Natural Science), and The Research in Ancient Books.

During the past thirty years as a qualified personnel-training base for educational institutions, HCITC has sent over 30,000 graduates into society. Alumni of HCITC serve as the backbones and spark plugs in diverse fields. They have the characteristic of “broad foundation, expertise, high quality and being keen on innovation”. All social circles sing highly of them on their style of “guilelessness, reassurance and competence ”, which brings forth sound honor to HCITC.

With its motto of “Scientifically progressing, democratically administrating, and carefully nurturing students,” HCITC has received much recognition for its teaching quality. The Ministry of Organization of the Central Committee of the C.P.C awarded the Party Committee of HCITC the title of the State Advanced Party Unit at the Basic Level; in 1997 HCITC was granted the title of Advanced Collective of Anhui Province by the People’s Government of Anhui Province. Since 1991, HCITC has been awarded continuously the title of the Advanced Unit of Social Practice Activity 14 times by the Propaganda Department of the Central Committee of the CPC, the Communist Youth League Centre, and the Ministry of Education.
