Shanghai Architecture, a Window to Better Know Shanghai History

Shanghai, a metropolis in the world, is also a national historical and cultural city which owns 19 national cultural heritage sites, 136 Shanghai municipal cultural relic protection units and 4 municipal level historical towns.
Shanghai Town God’s Temple, located in the most prosperous district of old Shanghai, is an important and famous Taoist Temple of Shanghai region. Built during Ming Yongle period (1403 – 1424), the Town God’s Temple has been nearly 600 years old. Once destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, the temple has been renovated and repaired now, receiving thousands of tourists every day.
Before 1949, Shanghai was a place of luxury and dissipation. Paramont ballroom was called to be the first dancing hall of Far East region.

Shanghai Big World was considered to be the most prestigious entertainment center at that time. Shanghai Race Club was the largest-scale racecourse in Asia with the most advanced equipments. Many high-level cinemas and hotels were opened in Shanghai.

Great Light Cinema, built in 1928, firstly showed a sound film in Asia region. Shanghai Concert Hall was one of the four concert halls of best sound quality. Shanghai Astor House Hotel is the first modern hotel in Asia, and Asia’s first street-lamp was lit here. Peace Hotel is considered to be the most luxurious hotel in Far East.
Shanghai has many different styles of the old building, and a group of old buildings in the Bund left over by the Far East Financial Street have been served as the symbol of Shanghai, such as Shanghai HSBC Building, Shanghai Customs Building with the first Asia clock tower, etc. In the urban area of Shanghai, many marvelous garden houses are left from 1920s or 1930s, like Lilac Garden, Sassoon Villa, Muller Villa and so on. Shanghai’s charm and beauty not only lie on the skyscrapers in new business districts, but are more embodied by the old-style buildings spreading every corner of the city, both Chinese traditional style and western style. Some of Shanghai Hotels are rebuilt on the basis of old buildings. When you travel in Shanghai, this kind of hotels is strongly recommended to you, and your China Shanghai holidays will be more interesting and memorable.
