Some Things Must Be Known Before Visiting Tibet

Before you start your dream trip to Tibet, you would try your best to know more information about all aspects of Tibet, including what to bring, folk customs and taboos, etc. The following information and tips would be helpful for you.
1. Tourists should have a healthy physical condition. People with serious heart disease or hypertension are inappropriate to travel to Tibet.
2.

Personal equipments include sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, sporting clothes, comfortable shoes, raingears and other daily articles. Bring down coat if your Tibet holiday is in winter.
3.

Good psychological quality is a must. Keep in good mood, otherwise anxiety or poor sleep would lead to the increase of altitude sickness.
4. Tibet has a changeable climate with low temperature in the morning and night. Sweaters and cold-proof underwear are necessary. Wearing a pair of sunglasses and a hat when in outdoor to protect against the ultraviolet radiation.
5.

High-calorie and digestible food are proper to eat in Tibet Plateau. Never overeat especial for the evening meals to avoid increasing the burden on the stomach and much pressure on heart and lung, to cause chest tightness and palpitation.
6. Taboos in Tibet:
a.

Donkey’s meat, horse’ meat and dog’s meat are taboos of Tibetan diet.
b. Avoid clapping hands behind others
c.

Bypass the religious facilities like temples, Mani piles from left to right.
d. Prayer wheels should be circled clockwise.
e.

Do not touch other’s heads.
7. Shopping tips
a. Most of the items sold in Bajiaojie Street can be strong bargained at half.
b. Tibetan herbal medicines are suggested to buy in state-run pharmacies.
c. Most of the ornaments sold in the street are made by fake beads, Tin Eye stones and turquoise.
d. Tibetan daggers must be mailed and can not be checked by plane.
8. The best manner to meet monks is palms together with the head slightly bowing, no shaking hands and no hugs.
9. Don’t make noises in the temples, and if comes across Buddhist activities, you’d better stay silently or leave quietly.
10. When walking on Bajiaojie Street, remember to walk in clockwise direction as the Tibetans turning prayer wheels.
11. The best season to visit Tibet is from May to September, as the temperature during this period is proper. But actually, visiting Tibet in winter is also a good choice for tourists are fewer and you can more freely to enjoy the beautiful sceneries.
