How to Arrange Xian Touring Itinerary Properly
By:BoBo Wang

For most foreigners who travel in China, Xian may not be the first destination as it is not famous as Beijing and modernized as Shanghai. No one can deny that China’ root is grown in Xian which was called Chang’an in the past time. The first emperor of China who united the nation settled the capital city in Xianyang which is only 30 kilometers away from Xian in 221BC. The most powerful and glorious dynasty in China’s history – Tang Dynasty was established in Chang’an.

Historical relics are easy to find every corner of the city. People in Xian are living in a big historical relic site. Every morning they do exercises at the foot of ancient City Wall and dance in the City Wall Park at evening. On the way home or to the office, people drive passing by the Bell Tower, the Drum Tower, Big Wild Goose Pagoda, etc. These ancient constructions are quietly standing there, no difference with other buildings, but we all know what they have experienced.

For general tourists, visiting Xian for four days is probably enough although we know there are plenty would be missed. In these four days, the essences of Xian or even Shaanxi province are included. We could simply arrange itineraries in four steps as following.
First day is a whole-day city tour, and the first place to go is Shaanxi History Museum. As most of Xian attractions’s historical meaning is more important than other aspects, it is necessary to have a general idea of Xian history to help with your understanding of the historical relics, and Shaanxi History Museum is the best place. Hiring a professional guide on the spot or just renting an electronic guiding machine, you could start your Shaanxi history tour in no less than a whole morning. Then, go to Big Wild Goose Pagoda nearby, and both Cien Temple and the surrounding square are worth your two hours. After that, move to the city center and climb the Bell Tower and Drum Tower. A featured Muslim food street is located behind Drum Tower, and in Huajue Lane, the Great Mosque which was built during Tang Dynasty is a tranquil place in the hustling city center, and you could go and see it if you are interested in Chinese Muslim culture. The last place to go in the first day is the City Wall. There are many entrances in different gate, and South Gate is strongly recommended. On the enclosed city wall, renting a bicycle is a not-bad idea to appreciate the views from the top.
In the second day, it comes to the most attractive attraction – Terracotta Army. We generally call this tour to be East Line. Situated in the east of the city, Terracotta Warriors are jointly visited with Huaqing Hot Spring and Li Mountain. This route would possibly cost an entire day. Besides, the performance of “Chang Hen Ge” in Li Mountain is suggested at evening which describes the moving love story of Tang Xuanzong and his concubine – Lady Yang.
In the third day, we go the contrary direction of East Line – West Line. Famen Temple and Qianling Mausoleum are the main touring spots. Famen Temple is renowned for storing the veritable Finger Bone of the Sakyamuni Buddha. Qianling Mausoleum is the unique imperial tomb which jointly buried two emperors of Tang Dynasty and one of them is the only female emperor in China’s history. After coming back to the city and if time is enough, you could see the Tablet Forest Museum which is a stunning concentration of Chinese calligraphy.
If you are a climbing amateur, Mount Hua in the last day would excite you mentally and physically. Mount Hua is considered to be the steepest mountain throughout China. Don’t forget to buy a lock and carved the names of you and the person you love on it. Lock the lock into the iron chain, and throw the key to the valley. You and the person you love will be blessed forever.
