Writing An Ebook
By:James Chartrand

Many freelance writers are looking to cash in on the e-book opportunity the internet presents. The advantage is that e-books are easy to create on a home computer with word-processing software, are simple to market, and sell well on the internet. Overhead costs are low, there are rarely any large sums of money to pay out up front, and there isn't a print stock supply that an author is stuck with. Writing an e-book can be a simple ten-page guide full of tips on a particular subject, or the e-book can be a full-blown fiction novel. Here are some considerations if you're planning on writing an e-book:

E-books should provide something of value to the reader. Whether they have ten pages or three hundred pages, e-books should have content that either entertains, provides advice, or educates. E-books should contain content that is no different from any other print book on the market. Avoid creating an e-book that is empty or has no meat on its bones. After all, people will pay for your material and should obtain something of worth for their money. Empty e-books degrade the overall market and industry of writing and take away from the pride an author should have in his or her talent and skills.

A good e-book should be sectioned properly into chapters that flow from start to finish. Organization of material helps readers follow the book from start to finish. Decide on what you're going to write, and then sit down and break that subject up into a structure. Each segment of your text should logically follow into the next. By making sure chapters flow well, an author guides a reader through the e-book and ensures that the reader keep turning pages.

Use bullet points and headers to break up text into chunks that are easier for readers to absorb. Attention spans are short and using lists, small sections, and bullet points can help hold a reader's interest. Sectioning your work can make your text less boring or long to read and adds visual appeal. Long paragraphs will lose reader attention and they'll set the book down.

E-books should be interesting. Even technical writing can be well-written and captivating to someone who is an avid enthusiast of the subject matter. Taking the time to make an e-book entertaining to the reader is important. If your text is bland or boring, a reader will surely lose interest and move on to something else.Making sure your text is captivating, no matter what subject you're writing on, also encourages repeat sales. A happy reader will buy the next e-book you write or recommend your work to someone else.

Include a foreword, a main page, a table of contents, and an index for readers. There is nothing worse than leafing through pages of a book to find the section you're looking for. A quick reference index can help readers find the section they wanted quickly and adds to the professionalism of your e-book.

If you're going to write and create e-books, be proud of putting out a good product. Many individuals slap material together, put on a fancy cover, and sell their e-books indiscriminately. Writing should be a profession that provides something valuable to a reader and especially so when the reader is plunking down money. A good writer always strives to have quality copy and deliver an effective message.
