Internet Tips

Create Google Friendly Websites
By:Nipa Shah

If you wish to benefit from your online presence, then just having a website is not enough. Once your website is ready, it has to show up in search engine results for keyword phrases that prospects are using to find services and products offered by you. Read our article about Keyword Research. To be able to get that ranking, it is important for a site to be accessible to search engine robots as well.

The following are guidelines provided by Google for creating websites that Google will like and index easily.

1) Content, Content, Content! Google wants you to have real content in your website. It is extremely important that your website

contains unique content that people will find worthwhile
is updated regularly with fresh content
has information that is interesting to visitors
contains call to action content that will convert visitors into customers
2) Make your website accessible to robots Make sure you use text links for your navigation. Avoid fancy Java Script or Flash menus as search engine robots or spiders will have trouble crawling them. Every page in your website should be reachable by robots from at least one static link. Although there is a myth about Google not being able to index dynamic pages, Google can index dynamic URL’s with a “?” in them.

However Google recommends the following to make it accessible to robots:

create static copies of the dynamic pages and add the URLs of dynamic pages to your robots.txt file to make sure that it doesn’t treat the pages as duplicates
Make sure there is a robots.txt file on your web server to tell crawlers which directories can or cannot be crawled
Make sure that the robot.txt file is current for your website
Check for broken links and incorrect htmls
Allow robots to crawl the website without session ID’s
Add alt-text for graphics and some content if possible
3) Show Google savvy. Don’t stuff keywords or create one set of pages for website visitors and another set of pages for search engines

Don’t believe that anyone can guarantee any kind of placement in search engines. There are no guaranteed placements possible in natural search engine optimization
Keep the links on any single page limited to fewer than 100 links
Don’t create multiple pages with same content or multiple domains with same pages and same content
Create a sitemap that has all the website pages listed on it
Don’t send automated queries to Google
Don’t use programs to check rankings or to submit pages
Summary If you follow these simple guidelines, you will be able to get your website ranked and indexed by Google and other search engines. When your website is ready, submit it to Google.
