Volunteering Abroad

H.E.L.P. Malawi
Geographical Area:Liwonde, Malawi, Southern Africa <info@helpchildren.org>

We are looking for qualified English tutors to come help change the lives of our students!

H.E.L.P Malawi's International Volunteer Tutors (IVTs) collaborate with Malawian teachers and H.E.L.P. Malawi staff to create a superior learning environment for primary school students (visit www.helpchildren.org). They improve our students' lives, learn a new culture, contribute directly to international development, and undergo transformative personal growth.

IVTs are responsible for teaching English (after-school), assisting his/her assigned co-teacher in a specific standard during the day, and evaluating and mentoring the students. They are also expected to integrate into the local culture and become community role models. IVTs will undergo an orientation upon arrival and receive continued guidance and support by the International Volunteer Coordinator (IVC). The IVTs will report to the IVC, Head Teacher and Teacher Trainer and will live and work at our core primary school. Successful applicants must have excellent communication skills, a flexible personality, at least two years of college education, experience teaching or tutoring ESL and a great sense of humor!

A commitment of at least three (3) months is required.

Responsibilities:
1. Tutor ESL and other selected courses to small groups of primary school students
2. Co-teaching the English Activity Class after school
3. Initiate secondary development projects for the school and the community.
4. Act as a positive, culturally-sensitive, responsible role model for the students
5. Participate in instructional tutorials by Ministry of Education and H.E.L.P. Malawi staff

Unlike other international volunteer programs, IVTs do not have to pay a placement or program fee, but are responsible for getting themselves to Malawi. Once here, housing accommodation is provided at no cost to the volunteer. IVTs are provided with a shared bedroom in the International Volunteer House at H.E.L.P. Malawi's main primary school.

The house can accommodate up to 4 volunteers at a time within two bedrooms. Bedrooms are single-sex unless occupied by a couple. There is a kitchen space, common area with a couch and dining table, and a refrigerator. Power is supplied through solar panel electricity. Running water is also available. There is an indoor bathroom with a flushing toilet and showerhead.

General supplies are also provided, though volunteers are responsible for toiletries and food. Food is very affordable ($100-$150 per month), as is traveling throughout the country. IVTs must be self insured for emergency medical coverage. H.E.L.P. Malawi will cover visas and/or permit fees.
