Course Description:

The CMUTEFL 120-hour certification course provides instruction and coaching in the theory and practice of teaching English as a foreign language to adults, commonly known as TEFL. It is an intensive course, requiring not only the six and a half hours a day of class time, but also several hours a day of reading, studying, lesson planning and preparing for lessons.

The input sessions provide trainees with an understanding of how our language works and how to effectively teach it to speakers of other languages. The input sessions cover language awareness (grammar, lexis and phonology), presentation skills, classroom management, lesson planning, how to use textbooks, the internet and other materials, how to teach speaking, listening, reading and writing, how to teach structure, lexis and phonology and other key ideas to raise awareness of current language teaching methodology. We place a heavy emphasis on the practical side of teaching so that by the time the TEFL trainees are required to get up and teach on their own, they are prepared and confident.

The practicum gives TEFL trainees the chance to put what they have learned in the input sessions into action. It offers students the opportunity to try what you have learned in a real language classroom. The practicum begins on the first day of the course, and on this day students will be given the opportunity to observe and participate as the practicum trainer teaches the class. For the following day, the TEFL trainees will teach portions of the class as assigned by the practicum trainer. By the third day of the course, the TEFL trainees will be teaching the practicum from lesson plans they have prepared on their own.We spend two hours per day in practice teaching, allowing each trainee the opportunity to teach a minimum of six classroom hours. This will begin with teaching smaller activities and build up to independently planning and teaching a one-hour class.
